What is the best way to contact you?
Please send a note to school in your child's folder or email me at [email protected]. If you have an urgent message, feel free to have the office interrupt me in the classroom.
How can I volunteer in the classroom?
I love having parents come in to help with reading groups, copying, and other projects. Feel free to email me about your skills and schedule.
How do I know if my child is doing OK academically?
I will give your child diagnostic tests in reading and math during the first month of school. If I notice any learning gaps, I will let you know asap so we can work together to help him or her catch up.
What rules does my child need to follow?
The Taft ELC rule is the 3 R's: "Be respectful, responsible; and ready to learn."
Our class rule is N.W.N.T. This is an abbreviation for no walking, no talking. We spend lots of time walking, talking and doing group work, but students need to follow the rule when they are doing their quiet seat work.
What is your discipline policy?
Students receive a red cube on their desk with clear directions to change their behavior. If a child receives 3 red cubes, they write a letter home to their parents and bring a note to school the next morning explaining what they will do differently.
How does my child make up missed school work due to illness?
If you call the office and ask me to send work home, I will do my best to get it ready. Students usually have up to a week to pass in missed assignments.
When is extra help provided?
Extra help is usually on Tuesday afternoons from 3:05 until 3:50. If your child needs help and staff is available in the office, I will send a note home. Please make every effort to have your child come so they do not get overwhelmed with a difficult skill.
How can my child earn rewards or prizes?
Prizes are sometimes given for extra credit homework projects, winning learning games, and/or extra good behavior.
Why can't my child drink anything but water in the classroom?
Other children wind up sitting in the sticky juice puddles that seep into our rugs.
