Dear Parents and Students,
For 5 days, we will be doing Celebrations Around the World. During this fun activity, the second grade boys and girls will travel to other classrooms and learn how holidays are celebrated in foreign countries. On Thursday, they packed their passports and traveled to Israel in Mrs. Dunlavey's class. They learned about Hannukah, and made a Menorah. In our class, we will read a folk tale about a Russian Babushka and do a craft activity with nesting dolls similar to those in the picture. Because the periods are short, and the students enjoy the crafts, the only homework this week is an optional opportunity to work on unfinished projects.
Bon Voyage Boys and Girls!

Weekly Homework will usually be sent home on Friday. Homework is due the following Thursday. We will frequently take quizzes or tests on Thursday. Be prepared for tests on Vocabulary, Spelling, Math and Reading Comprehension.
Note to Parents: The children are learning at their own pace. If the homework is too difficult for your child, please write me a note and explain how you needed to modify it. I want you and your child to feel like homework is a positive learning experience. Some children will come home with highlighted class-work that they need to fix or finish for homework. For the sake of your child's success, I will not accept any excuses from the children about missing, messy, or incomplete homework. Extra homework will be assigned. Thanks for being a partner in your child's education!
HELPFUL HINTS for learning vocabulary:
1. Pronounce the word in syllable chunks: example: re - spon - si - bil - i - ty Try to write it from memory.
2. Learn the definition including synonyms and antonyms and put it into your own words. example: synonym = job antonym = not my job
3. Draw pictures and compose meaningful sentences in your own words as captions below the pictures.
Example: It is my responsibility to feed the cat, but my cat has no job at all.
A thesaurus is good reference book to have on hand.
