Sparkle's Puppies at Two Weeks Old
May 23, 2014
Dear Parents and Students,
This week nearly all of the students finished taking their end-of-year DORA and DRA2 exams for reading. Their hard work and excellent effort paid off! It is wonderful to see how children are decoding longer words, and using comprehension strategies to make sense of difficult reading passages. Best of all, children are immersing themselves in challenging reading books.
It is very rewarding to know that everyone from this class chooses to read for pleasure.
Gaye Quintiliani
HOMEWORK: From now, until the end of the year, homework will be to fix and/or finish work from class. Children who choose to can do book reports and/or projects for prizes and extra credit.

Well done boys and girls! The International Fair was a spectacular event. You did a great job singing, dancing, presenting your posters and baking. It was a joy to see so many parents, grandparents, and other relatives in the audience enjoying the show. Your only homework this week is to try to watch yourselves on channel 13 Uxbridge Local Cable T.V. Enjoy the fame!

Dear Parents and Students,
This class is fortunate to have so many dedicated parent helpers. Parents have been helping with Scholastic Book orders, photocopying tests and practice pages, teaching differentiated math, and reading groups, advocating for funds, and counting Books & Beyond Minutes. The children love it when you are here. So do I! Thank you for helping to make learning fun.
Appreciatively,
Mrs. Quintiliani

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for the pet food donations! Today, a number of stuffed animals are perched on desks, doing their best to help measure gelatinous gummy worms with centimeter rulers. This week, we began writing about an important event that changed our lives. The children have selected a topic and they are working on adding details to describe their experiences in an interesting way. Topics include learning to ride a bike, training a pet, the birth of a sibling, moving to a new neighborhood, etc. You can help at home by having a discussion with your child about events that have changed you. Enjoy the spring weather everyone!

Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you to the kind parent who donated the book about candy experiments! Do you know how you can release carbon dioxide gas from a liquid or a solid? Today we experimented with Warhead Candies, warm water, and baking soda. The reaction between the acid and base made a chemical reaction. The bubbles were amazing! The children thought of other acidic foods that might react with the base in baking soda. I hope with parents permission that some of you will feel free to try similar experiments at home.

Dear Parents and Students,
Today we began our "Good as Gold" whole-class reward program. This program will give us extra practice adding and subtracting coins and bills up to $5.00. For the next couple of weeks, students will be able to earn glittering coins for extra good behavior. The class goal is $5.00. So far, we have $.50. If and when we reach the goal, the students will get to watch an educational video. Good luck everyone!

Wow! Our amaryllis is a survivor. It recovered after breaking its stem in the car. Then, it grew to be 21 inches tall. Now, it is showing off 4 beautiful flowers despite toppling over onto the picnic table. The amaryllis reminds me of all of you. You have faced many hard learning challenges. It took a lot of effort to learn addition facts to 20, add, and regroup, write well-organized stories and paragraphs, and use synonyms to help you understand your reading. Most of you accomplished all of these tasks. Do you think you are persistent and tenacious? I do!
Hint: You are all a lot like Garfield on the poster.
Your homework this week is to make a chart listing as many synonyms as you can find for the underlined words abpve. For extra credit, make a list of 5 interesting words from one good book you are reading. Find synonyms for the words and tell us the title of the book. You can tell us about these new words next week during share time and earn a prize.

Dear Students,
Your imaginary country posters are amazing! There are bright, bold flag designs, interesting geographic features like waterfalls, volcanoes, mountains, forests and lakes. Sparkleland is flashing bright lights in our hall. Tourists would love to visit these places and engage in the fun activities you have suggested. Imagine looking for diamonds inside a volcano and finding gold nuggets in the mountains. You can do these things in the Diva Islands and in Philipinasia. I can't wait to see your finished paragraphs. You are using exciting words and giving many good reasons to travel to your countries. If only we really could!
Mrs. Quintiliani
P.S. Thank you to the students who brought in creative ideas and materials from home. Thank you to S.O., M.W., and G.M. for doing extra credit writing. You helped everyone to learn!

Dear Boys and Girls,
It was so much fun reading the letters you wrote to your naughty elves. I hope they did not get into too much trouble. Weren't we lucky to have Santa make a surprise visit to our class? He had a lot of good things to say about you. So do I! Thanks for your good effort in here. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas. Remember to play hard and read a lot.
Warm Wishes,

Dear Parents and Students,
The children did a fantastic job using time-order words to tell about our amaryllis project. Did you know it grew from 2 1/2 inches to 3 1/4 inches? Keep up the great writing!.
For 5 days, we will be doing Celebrations Around the World. During this fun activity, most of the second grade boys and girls will travel to other classrooms and learn how holidays are celebrated in foreign countries. On Thursday, they packed their passports and traveled to Israel in Mrs. Dunlavey's class. They learned about Hannukah, and made a Menorah. In our class, we will read a Christmas folk tale about a Russian Babushka and do a craft activity with nesting dolls similar to those in the picture. Because the periods are short, and the students enjoy the crafts, the only homework this week is an optional opportunity to work on unfinished projects.
Bon Voyage Boys and Girls,

Class News
Recently, some students expressed an interest in writing news articles about our class. They are experimenting with me as I learn how to scan student work and link it as a PDF document. Yikes!
The steps were as follows:
1. First, students made lists of subjects they wanted to report on.
2. Next, they chose a subject.
3. Then they wrote and edited their articles.
4. After that, I scanned the articles on the copy machine, which sent the documents to email.
5. Finally, I downloaded and converted them to PDF and uploaded the links here to Weebly.
Thanks for your patience as we learn this. If your child wants to post a "Class News" article, please send written permission. Thanks!

Dear Parents and Students,
Please check below for the parent teacher conference schedule. Larger class sizes made it necessary to limit conferences to 10 minutes. There are so many positive things to say about your children. It will be hard to fit it all in! Forgive me if I talk fast. I would appreciate it if you make an effort to be on time.
Did you know, E.D.'s great grandfather earned two purple hearts in WWII? The children are proud of the amazing friends and relatives who bravely served our country. There are pilots, leaders, trainers and decorated heroes from all branches of the armed services. Their posters are hanging in the hall. Many students requested extra time to complete this project. Next week we will do a scavenger hunt to learn more facts about these awesome veterans.
Sincerely,
Gaye Quintiliani

Dear Parents and Students,
There is a wonderful collection of spooky stories hanging in the hall! Thank you to Mr. Thompson for drawing all those talking pumpkins. I wish everyone could have heard the children using their spelling words to tell each other stories. Many students are now able to alter their voices to capture the attention of an audience.
Thank you to Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Okenquist for decorating our door with personalized spiders. The children and I loved this.
I hope many of you will be able to join us tonight for the Old Fashioned Costume Party at Taft from 6-8 p.m.
Sincerely,

Dear Parents and Students,
Many children have brought in fascinating specimens of leaves, bark, fruit and other parts of trees and plants. We have an assortment of leaves taped to the window that we are learning how to identify. Quite a few students can recognize all of some of the following:
Sumac, red maple, sugar maple, white oak, pin oak, sassafras and shag bark hickory. We are so lucky to live in an area where we have a wide variety of colorful, native species!
Thank you to Mrs. Horgan and Mrs. Ritacco who have been coming in to help with reading groups. The children love working with you! If anyone else is interested in doing this, please email me.
Help! Is anybody able to decorate our classroom door next week? Sparkle and I will be dressing up and passing out candy at the costume party. It would be so exciting to have a spooky door.
I hope everyone has restful Columbus Day weekend.
Sincerely,
Gaye Quintiliani
Dear Parents and Students,
This morning was Free Write Friday. The children wrote about their personal experiences in their morning notebooks. Afterwards, many children shared what they had written.
Topics included a trip to Disney World, a sleepover with a friend, a parent visit to an older sibling in college, an undefeated football team, a detailed description of a new dog, and a review of three new video games. This is a busy group of children who know how to have fun. My compliments to parents for providing them with great experiences.
A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Lamarre for suggesting that we do this type of writing. It is a wonderful way to get to know each other while practicing skills. Many children used vocabulary words, main idea and details, spelling rules, and other things we are learning in class.
In math, the children have been practicing number patterns and place value. Some of the extra-credit place value projects are hanging in front of the office. The photo I pasted above has a selection of place-value "crayon boxes". The children thought of many creative ways to express the place value concept. I love how they are teaching each other!
Sincerely,
Gaye Quintiliani

Dear Parents and Students,
I love the sound of the children's voices while they sing "When Two Vowels Go Walking". One parent commented that the song got stuck in her head, but she learned a new spelling rule. Even though there are lots of exceptions to the spelling rules in English, the progress is already evident in the children's writing.
Thank you to the students who made place value posters. You did a great job and your classmates learned from you!
This week, the children's groups became continents. The green group is now living on North America. The purple group is on South America. The yellow group is Africa. The red group is Europe. The turquoise group is Asia and the blue group is Australia. Antarctica is too cold for human habitation and we only have 6 groups, so nobody in our class is living there.
In social studies we are learning about some of the events that lead up to the Revolutionary War. Most of the children now understand that we were ruled by the king of England before we made our own laws and became a country. Everyone should be able to read the word "constitution". We learned about chlorophyll in science. On Tuesday, we will go to the computer lab to learn more about the changing seasons. I hope everyone enjoys the beautiful fall colors while they are gathering leaves for their leaf booklet.
Sincerely,
Gaye Quintiliani

Dear Parents,
It was a pleasure to listen to the children's talking character puppets! Thank you for supporting your child with an opportunity to use his/her imagination and to share in front of a group. Last Tuesday, we took an extra trip to the computer lab to learn how to use the links page. When your son or daughter does his/her homework , he/she should be able to find the link for the learning activities and go to the song. We are still working on place value in math. If your child is confused about "place value" on their folder, the extra credit math activity will help him/her to understand. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

If you want to buy books from Scholastic, all September and October orders must be placed online by Sept. 28th.

Dear Parents,
This week we worked on short vowels, long vowels and vowel combinations. The children used "vowel towels" to make new words. Here is a list of a few words they spelled correctly on their own:
cook
book
boo
shook
toy
boy
cuckoo
too
fool
tool
We also are learning how to identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives in sentences. Your child should be able to read a simple sentence like: "Arthur sat in wet paint.", and identify the parts of speech:
Nouns = Arthur, paint
Verb = sat
Adjective = wet

On Monday we will be making "Math About Me" posters.
Dear Parents,
Thank you for taking the time to visit this page and for helping your child to stay organized! Most children are bringing their folders to school every day. I complimented them for keeping their tigers very clean. :)
It is great that they have the benefit of your support, because we have been learning a lot in here. This week we worked on writing an organized paragraph using the ABBBBD method. Almost everyone was able to write a topic sentence, four details, and a conclusion. Next, we learned about patterns. The children rapped to their own beats and created designs which they drew on the borders of their September calendars.
We have also been working on asking questions that begin with who, what, when, where, how and why. You may have heard about the question balloon which has been bouncing about the room. Please reinforce this by encouraging your child to formulate questions that begin with each of these words at home.
I am looking forward to meeting many of you at Open House on Sept. 11th.
Sincerely,
Gaye Quintiliani

Dear Parents,
We are off to a good start! This week the children worked together to get to know each other and get comfortable with their new routines. For a getting-to-know-you activity, we divided chart paper into six categories. There were two learning goals (see below). Children chose a favorite item from each section and used their talking balloons to find people in the class who have things in common with them. Fortunately only one balloon popped before we went home.
We also did some review work on vowels and consonants, ABC order, addition and subtraction. Please ask your child about "See the Light? Get it Right!" We will frequently do this activity so everyone can learn at their own pace. You can help at home by checking in with your son or daughter to make sure they understand the highlighted items they fixed in school.
Note: For many years, I keyboarded a weekly newsletter and homework. This year the printers and copiers have been broken more often than they are working. I would appreciate it if people could visit this page for weekly updates. Thanks for your support!

Dear Boys and Girls,
Do you remember how to make an organized list and how to use the words both and all in sentences about what you have in common? I think we all liked the funny story, Wemberly Worried, so I posted a link to the video. Enjoy!

Hi Boys and Girls,
Are you having a good summer? I am looking forward to welcoming you to second grade in room 223 at Taft ELC. Here is a picture of me with my granddaughter, Cassandra. She , my son, my daughter, and I just spent some time in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. We were 9,000 feet above sea level! Cassie didn't mind, but I got a little bit dizzy with the altitude.
Our goal this year is to make new friends and learn a lot. During the first week of school, we will be playing a balloon game to find out what we have in common. Do you like dogs or cats? What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? My favorite subject is Science. What is yours?
Be ready to share some facts like these about yourself as well as stories about your summer vacation. In the meantime, I hope you will use the links above to find out more about what to expect in Grade Two. I will see you soon!
